A New Chapter of Hope: The Grand Opening of The Estie Smith Learning Centre
On the 8th of May 2025, a long-held dream came to life at Laerskool Uniefees – the grand opening of The Estie Smith Learning Centre, a purpose-driven computer lab designed to unlock digital opportunities for young learners and ignite a brighter future for generations to come. This incredible milestone was made possible through the powerful partnership of Laerskool Uniefees, PnS Group, and The Potato Foundation.
Hope
The day was built around a single, powerful theme: hope.
In a world where technology drives opportunity, hope takes the shape of a keyboard, a screen, a curious young mind. It becomes the bridge between limitation and possibility – between where a child is now and where they could be. For many learners at Laerskool Uniefees, this centre marks the first time they’ve had access to such tools – a shift that opens doors not only to knowledge, but to self-belief.
Principal Mrs Estie Smith, after whom the centre is named, welcomed guests with heartfelt gratitude and pride. She reminded everyone that this moment was more than a ribbon-cutting – it was the beginning of something truly transformational.
“It’s a space where hope becomes learning, and learning becomes a future.”
These words carried deep meaning. Many of the children at Laerskool Uniefees come from tough circumstances where access to digital education is a distant luxury. With this centre, those barriers are broken – and replaced with possibility.
Empowerment Through Digital Learning
PnS CEO Glenn Brauns echoed this message, sharing the deeper purpose of the initiative:
“This learning centre is for our young learners – to empower them, to unite them. It’s a gateway to their future, to growth, and to opportunity. The tools they gain here will help them uncover purpose and create meaningful change in the world around them.”
He left the learners with a heartfelt message of encouragement:
“Explore. Ask questions. Have elements of curiosity. Let your imagination lead you. You are the ones who will make a better tomorrow than we are today – so ignite your spark and use it to create meaningful change.”
A Centre Already Alive With Learning
As the ribbon was cut and the centre officially opened, guests stepped into a vibrant, buzzing space. Grade 3 learners were already immersed in building their reading and comprehension skills on the centre’s 43 brand-new computers, their faces glowing with focus, excitement, and pride.
And this is just the beginning.
From Grade 1 to Grade 6, learners will now receive coding and robotics training, equipping them with critical skills to navigate a future shaped by innovation. These aren’t just extracurricular subjects – they are the building blocks of tomorrow’s leaders, creators, and problem-solvers.
Technology as a Tool for Transformation
In today’s world, technology is no longer optional – it’s essential. It’s how we learn, connect, and compete. For children who may not have access at home, spaces like The Estie Smith Learning Centre level the playing field, allowing talent and potential to rise – regardless of background.
This learning centre is a commitment – to empowerment, to opportunity, and to hope.
“When we give children the tools to learn, we do more than teach skills – we unlock imagination, possibility, and purpose. We give them a chance to not only change their own lives, but to shape a world that is brighter for us all.” – Unknown
