Social Impact

At PnS we prioritise ESG initiatives that drive social impact and community involvement.

Internally, we nurture talent to ensure sustainable business success. Externally, our Social Economic Development efforts focus on education and youth support, complemented by inclusive programs led by our Inclusion and Diversity Committee (IDC). Guided by senior management, our achievements include a Level 1 B-BBEE score, fostering a diverse and welcoming workplace culture.

We believe that building sustainable communities requires significant investment in the wellbeing, welfare, and education of our children and youth. Healthy children and adults develop through a holistic approach that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. Our engagement with and contribution to the communities in which we operate focuses on socio-economic development initiatives, primarily targeting childhood and youth care, nutrition, and education.

We aim to build lifelong relationships, partnering with children through their formative years by providing support, education, vocational skills, and ultimately, access to employment within our group.

In partnership with The Potato Foundation, PnS has been actively involved for several years with two large local schools in underserved areas. Our efforts have included building and equipping computer centre, providing solar power, and supporting the schools with related infrastructure costs. The programme has also provided laptops and software to teachers, alongside various welfare initiatives to support learner wellbeing.

PnS partners with several organisations that enable young people to reach their development potential. These include:

Boys and Girls Club: Boys & Girls Club South Africa offers a holistic development programme is designed to ensure that children become responsible citizens within their communities through structured and caring guidance and support at after-school clubs. Learners complete various programmes designed to support their academic, social, psychological and creative development.

PnS is able to connect with promising young people and offer them opportunities through our Learnership programmes. We have recently proudly employed two former BGCSA learners in our Pharma business.

Kukhula: At Kukhula education meets opportunity. Kukhula is a transformative partnership between PnS and Kukhula focused on empowering communities through skills development and entrepreneurship. This initiative offers accredited training programs across various sectors, including learnerships, industry training, and enterprise development, specifically targeting women, youth, and individuals with disabilities. By aligning learners’ interests with technical skills coaching and business fundamentals, Kukhula equips participants with the necessary tools to start their entrepreneurial journeys.

PnS partners Kukhula by sponsoring a cohort of learners and supporting Kukhula operationally. We provide recyclables, including old uniforms, banners, and other materials, which are repurposed into sellable products such as educational toys, bags, purses, dog toys, and décor items.

The “Upcycle Venture” initiative within Kukhula equips learners with practical skills and mentorship to launch their own businesses. Products created through this initiative are available for purchase as corporate gifts. A recent Market Day at our head office showcased the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of Kukhula learners, offering them a platform to sell their products to our staff and further their business experience.

Hope school – Career Day: Hope School is committed to supporting learners with various physical disabilities, enabling them to complete the mainstream CAPS curriculum, earn a national senior certificate, and transition into higher education or the workforce.

During a recent Career Day, PnS Disability Talent Ambassador, Koketso Maja, delivered an inspiring talk. She shared her personal journey of overcoming daily challenges and her success in effectively communicating with customers and colleagues. Our program emphasizes not only skills development but also fostering confidence and empowerment, helping students to navigate their futures with resilience and optimism.

Disability Summit & Career Expo: We participated in South Africa’s largest Disability Summit, which featured 25 high schools, 34 corporate exhibitors, and 6 universities. The event brought together 1,200 learners, graduates, and entrepreneurs living with disabilities. Dedicated to promoting recognition and inclusion, the summit provided us with an opportunity to engage with school leavers and offer valuable learnership opportunities, supporting our mission to cultivate a diverse and inclusive workforce.
